IVF Success Rates by Age and Number of Embryos

Two of the important factors that matters a lot in the IVF process is the “AGE” of the women undergoing the treatment and the “NUMBER AND QUALITY OF EMBROYS”. But first, we should be aware about the process of IVF? IVF is a process where an egg is combined with sperm in a medical lab. The process involves removing an ovum from the woman’s ovaries and letting the sperm fertilize under the presence of a medical doctor. Let’s briefly discuss these two major factors for women one by one: -

AGE OF WOMEN

It has been observed that women below the age of 35 and above 20 are at higher rate getting a successful IVF treatment. In approximately 40% of the cases in women (below age of 30), the transfer of embryo results into successful pregnancy. If the woman had a child before, she has higher chances of having a successful IVF cycle.

Earlier it was believed that womenabove 40’s can’t conceive. However, with progressive medical technological advancements, women can enjoy their motherhood in their 40’s. The chances are less for getting pregnant in first round;therefore, it is advised to go more than one IVF round to acquire pregnancy this age.

It’s important to not solely considering age as the only factor and ignoring the other ones like surroundings, nutrition, physical health and mental health.

NUMBER OF EMBROYS

The number and quality of embryos also decides the success of an IVF cycle. It is worth mentioning that most of failures in IVF treatment happens because of poor quality of embryos. There are techniques like PGD (Pre-Implementation Diagnosis), which helps the specialists to find the most efficient embryo for IVF treatment. There are two cases of embryo transfers, Single and Multiple Embryos.

Doctors recommend carrying out single embryo transfer while carrying out the IVF treatment. In multiple embryos transfer, there’s risk for multiple births which pose the risk for the health of the baby. The risk factors are less than 3%, but we should not ignore the potential risks involved in the process.

Over the years, India has been developing tremendously in the area of IVF technology. When IVF first came in India, it was accepted by couples facing fertility issues. The success rates for IVF in India lies between 30-35% as calculated by Obstetrics and Gynecology Department. Doctors are certain that by the next decade, we’ll achieve the 40% benchmark of success rates.
