All You Need to Know About Ovulation

Ovulation

The process of releasing eggs from the ovaries to the Fallopian tube is called Ovulation. The cycle of ovulation will differ from woman to woman and also from mensuration cycle to cycle. The process of ovulation happens between 13th - 15th day before the next menstrual period. The egg has to be fertilized by the sperm in the next 12-24 hours, before the egg degrades. The sperm can live in the uterus for about 3-5 days, during which if ovulation happens it may fertilize an egg. After fertilization the egg attaches itself to the lining of the uterus and will develop into a fetus.

Ovulation cycle is a very important process in the woman’s body, not only as a part of the process of giving birth to a child, it is also a process in the body which initiates a lot of hormone flow necessary for the well being of a women.

Ovulation is one of the four stages of menstrual cycle.

  • Mensuration: This stage is where the uterus eliminates its thick lining formed for the attachment of the egg to be developed as a fetus. It releases this layer if no fertilization has taken place as the menstrual fluid  which contains blood, cells from lining and mucus.

  • Follicular Phase: Follicular Phase starts with the first day of mensuration and ends when ovulation starts. This is the Phase a hormone called the FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) is released. This stimulates the ovary to form follicles around the immature egg and transport it to the Fallopian tube. As soon as the follicles develop the uterus thickens in anticipation of a fertilized egg to attach itself to the uterus.

  • Ovulation: Ovulation start when the follicle releases the matured egg into the fallopian tube and this egg will remain alive for another 12 to 24 hours ready to be fertilized and it will die if no fertilization takes place in that period. This release is prompted by the high levels Luteinizing Hormone. During these two phases a lot of hormones as directed by the brain is released to help a follicle to prepare an egg and make it ready for fertilization. According to the needs of the egg hormones like oestrogen, follicle stimulating hormone, gonadotrophin releasing hormones and Luteinizing hormone.

  • Luteal Phase: This is the phase where the progesteron and oestrogen is released by the ruptured follicle which has taken the role of corpus luteum to release the two hormones that help the lining of uterus to stay thickened in anticipation of a fertilized egg to attach to it.

Knowing the ovulation period is very crucial for a woman who is intending to be pregnant. The knowledge about ovulation and ovulation cycle and its fertile period would a good factor in a successful conception. The knowledge of this period could also be good to prevent conception and help in family planning. The ovulation cycle is also a very critical biomarker for the good health of the woman.
